Paradise Lost

By brian francis

Well I’ve stood in the line
Awaiting salvation
Body and blood
Wafer and wine
Confessed all my sins
Without exception
And still was left seeking
Some secretive sign

I’ve read all the words
That the good book offers
Listened to teachers
From some other time
Cried at the news
Of the salvation
Body and blood
The symbol the sign

I’ve claimed to be loyal
Yet then found misgivings
Doubts interceded
Salvation the cost
Yearned for the time
The well spring of passion
Closed off by reason
Paradise lost
