Over the Shoulder

By brian francis

Have you ever asked, “Am I still that stupid?”
when remembering life and younger days.
The change in perspective destroys the illusion
that was so easily held and completely believed.
Moments that haunt us and challenge our present,
those moments of less than honorable intent,
When the object for us was greed or ambition.
Or even lust, if we must see the truth of it all.

The steps off the path, so obvious in hindsight,
seemed all right, correct, inspiring pride at times.
Conscience it is, these memories that haunt us
while pride and the vanities contort and blind.
And the path seems to grow dimmer, more narrow,
as I look out ahead to the horizon it leads.
The mysteries to come keeps drawing me onward
contentedly measuring myself and my deeds.
